Rheumatology
Problems affecting the joints or organs that involve inflammation are classed as rheumatic complaints. A rheumatologist can help with rheumatic complaints. Rheumatologists examine and treat people with rheumatic diseases.
About 100 different conditions are classed as rheumatic diseases. These are conditions of the musculoskeletal system that are not caused by an accident. The most common symptoms of rheumatic disease are pain, stiffness, fatigue and swollen joints. Patients often have had these symptoms for some time before eventually being referred to a rheumatologist, who can make a diagnosis.
Appointment with the rheumatologist
An appointment with the rheumatologist begins with a consultation about your symptoms and problems. This is followed by a physical examination in which the joints are assessed and tested.
A joint aspiration, blood tests or an X-ray may be needed to make the correct diagnosis. Once the problem is clear, treatment is started. This may involve medication, surgery or lifestyle advice.
Working with other specialists
The rheumatologist works closely with other specialists, such as the orthopaedic surgeon when surgery is required, or the neurologist when pain relief is needed. A physiotherapist is also often involved to help people move better again or learn to manage their limitations.
