Radiology
A radiologist is a medical specialist who mainly focuses on making diagnoses using further investigations. A well-known example of further investigation is an X-ray.
The radiologist uses X-rays, ultrasound, MRI scans and CT scans to determine what is causing symptoms. This makes organs, bones, muscles and other tissues visible for assessment.
Some radiologists not only make diagnoses, but also perform treatments, such as angioplasty on a narrowed blood vessel. During the treatment, the radiologist uses imaging techniques to check that everything is proceeding as planned. This is called interventional radiology.
A radiologist works closely with the radiographer, who operates most of the equipment. Other doctors often ask the radiologist to help make a diagnosis by assessing an X-ray or scan.
