Geriatric physiotherapy
A geriatric physiotherapist specialises in treating people who experience physical symptoms due to their older age. People who are still relatively young and, for example, have had a stroke or have Parkinson's disease are also treated within geriatric physiotherapy.
The symptoms seen in geriatric physiotherapy are often extensive and complex and do not always lie solely within the musculoskeletal system. Consider, for example, someone with dementia who has fallen and broken a hip.
This group of patients requires specific knowledge about the changes that occur as a result of ageing. Additionally, someone with a stroke or dementia also requires a different approach than an otherwise healthy patient.
Treatment by a geriatric physiotherapist
The geriatric physiotherapist has a wide range of tests and exercises for this patient group. Generally, the treatment focuses on improving or maintaining mobility and independence.
This is usually achieved through exercise therapy, which trains muscle strength, fitness, and balance. When significant improvement is no longer possible, the focus shifts to maintaining the best possible quality of life.
Involvement of family and carers
The geriatric physiotherapist often does not work solely with the patient. Others, such as family members, carers, or partners, are also regularly involved.
Where does a geriatric physiotherapist work?
Because the geriatric physiotherapist often deals with older and/or unwell individuals, they are frequently found, not only in private practices, but also in care or nursing homes, hospitals, and rehabilitation centres. Here, they collaborate with geriatricians (specialists in elderly medicine), GPs, and care staff.
