Occupational therapist

An occupational therapist helps people who have difficulty performing everyday activities. These problems may result from physical or psychological complaints and may occur at home, work, school or a (sports) club.

Together with the patient, the occupational therapist looks at what is still possible, with or without adaptations or aids.

What does an occupational therapist do?

If medication, surgery or other therapies no longer work, the occupational therapist works with the patient to find the most suitable solution. A treatment plan is prepared by considering what is important to the patient and what they can do.

By identifying limitations, and especially possibilities, the occupational therapist develops a plan to reduce or remove obstacles.

The occupational therapist's work includes:

  • Promoting independence.
  • Adapting the home or workplace.
  • Training in the use of aids and applying for them.
  • Managing limitations.

Who is occupational therapy for?

Anyone can see an occupational therapist: a child with spasticity or a developmental disorder, adults with functional problems following an accident or illness, or older people who want to remain independent for as long as possible.

The occupational therapist also provides information to the patient's support network. They often need to take the limitations into account without neglecting themselves or developing problems. Occupational therapists often work closely with carers, family members, doctors and physiotherapists.

There are three occupational therapy specialisations requiring additional training:

  • Occupational therapy for hand problems.
  • Occupational therapy for children.
  • Occupational therapy for older people.

Where does an occupational therapist work?

An occupational therapist may work in an occupational therapy practice, hospital, rehabilitation centre, school, nursing home or other healthcare facility. Treatment can take place almost anywhere, including the workplace, schools, people's homes or sports clubs.
