Synovial fluid

Synovial fluid

Synovial fluid, or joint lubricant, is fluid located in the joint capsule. Produced by the blood vessels in the joint capsule, synovial fluid ensures that joint surfaces remain separated from each other, minimizing friction and preventing wear.

Synovial fluid also plays an important role in nourishing the articular cartilage. The production of synovial fluid is stimulated by joint movement, which improves joint mobility and simultaneously nourishes the cartilage.

Synovial fluid can be compared to the oily layer in a hinge.
